This year's Costume Institute Gala at the Met museum in New York may have had the theme "PUNK: Chaos to Couture" - but the looks witnessed on the Manhattan red carpet seemed a lot more inspired than impromptu.
There was of course the expected degree of Vivienne Westwood, lashings of tartan and enough eyeliner to turn the sky a wet-look noir, but there were also some unfalteringly beautiful, rather more tangential, gowns for us to gasp at; as is de rigeur most years.
Here, we present to you a selection of favourites and conversation starters for you to feast your fashion eyes upon. Bon Appetit.
Thom Browne and Taylor Tomasi Hill (in Thom Browne) attend the Met Gala 2013: Here TTH clearly defines her need for personal space by outlining any potential 'boob grazes' with a little severe weaponry. Ideal for public transport.
Jennifer Lawrence wears Dior to the Met Gala 2013: OK, so bar the studded heels, this is admittedly a little more My Fair Lady than misfit, but, you know, it's J-Law and she looks all pretty in her veil.
Gwen Stefani wears Maison Martin Margiela to the Met Gala 2013: Oddly enough, this is probably one of the least 'punk' get ups we've seen Gwen-Stef in, like, ever, but it's just so Goddamn chic. Man.
Anja Rubik wears Anthony Vaccarello to the Met Gala 2013: We find this devilish chain mail creation utterly thrilling; in the Michael Jackson sense of the word. Bravo on the bravery nevertheless.
Bella Heathcote wears Chanel to the Met Gala 2013: The jagged edges on this architecturally angelic piece would inspire even the most thrashing of guitar riffs.
Nicole Richie wears Topshop to the Met Gala 2013: This Marie Antoi-punk high street triumph is amongst our favourites of the night. Top to silver pointed toe perfection.
Gwyneth Paltrow wears Valentino to the Met Gala 2013: This fuchsia creation sparked mass debate on the fashion desk today. Agreed, it's stunning. Point of discussion as to just how 'punk'... the mesh slashed panel made it allowed in our category.
Anne Hathaway wears vintage Valentino to the Met Gala 2013: This is a bad girl dress. And that is bad girl hair. Those are ridiculously perky bad girl boobs and if we squint we can see Sharon Stone in front of us.
Diane Kruger wears Chanel Haute Couture to the Met Gala 2013: We have a feeling Karl personally stitched Krugs into this number, and we have a fantasy that Choupette dip-dyed her hair by playing with it with painty paws.
Sienna Miller wears Burberry to the Met Gala 2013: Snarl? Check. Studs? Check by approximately 5000. Killing it? Absolutely.
Gisele Bundchen wears Anthony Vaccarello to the Met Gala 2013: Once again our jaws drop at metallic accented perfection. Seriously, she's had two kids. TWO.
Rooney Mara wears Givenchy Haute Couture to the Met Gala 2013: The most badass doily we've ever come across. Monochromatic make up complements everyone's favourite red carpet raven wondrously.
Joan Smalls and Tom Ford (wearing Tom Ford) attend the Met Gala 2013: This image is just one massive sigh. A good one, but a sigh none the less.
Cameron Diaz wears Stella McCartney to the Met Gala 2013: The epitome of Polished Punk if ever there was one, surely? The cut, the fit, the COLOUR, the belt - exquisite all round.
Elettra Rossellini Wiedemann wears Prabal Gurung to the Met Gala 2013: Absolutely nothing to do with the theme whatsoever, but who doesn't love a giant slice of Battenberg? And we love it.
