How to wear mixed prints?
- words by Hannah Slapper, styling by Rebecca Corbin Murray
Mary Katrantzou has been plying us with perfect prints for a few seasons now, and every time we've gazed at them in wonder. Our first thoughts are always, how can she dream up such creative digital designs? But during the SS13 shows our awe was quickly replaced with incredulity, as we worried that those silken slips and challenging shapes might be reserved for the willowy figures of models and self-starving editors, or were only appropriate at exclusive parties where you could afford to be daring.
When Katrantzou announced a collaboration with our favourite denim brand, Current/Elliott, these fears were suddenly washed away. Here was a capsule collection that had all of her signature artistry, but with the unbeatable wearability of denim. However, with those busy prints, it's vital that you don't overwork them, or cause them to look out of place with bland accessories.
One of our favourite pieces were the forever flattering Current/Elliott stiletto jeans in the intricate Night Hawk print. The deep blue and black overlapping shapes give the impression of scribbled ink, and the symbols have an almost aztec feel to them.
Lighten the depth of the print with a pastel knit, such as this jumper by Stella McCartney. The oversized cut will slim your legs, which can look slightly bulkier than usual in patterned trousers. A pair of 'barely there' white and perspex Alexander Wang sandals will have a similar effect, while adding to the contemporary feel of the look.
Celebrate your irreverence by mixing prints, but choose something that brings out the colour of your top half, in this case a Proenza Schouler PS1 with similar minty hues hidden in that retro design. Finish off with a subtle but statement jewellery piece. We love Delfina Delettrez's double ring.
The final product? A look that's definitely both current, and Katrantzou.
