How to wear lace?

Lace is an evergreen trend, but like all the best materials, can be constantly reworked to look new and refreshing. Lace is traditionally dark and romantic in the winter, and light, white, or bright in the summer. What to do with Resort then?

Valentino are a brand that could consider heavyweights in the lace-usage war. They've been using that fabric in ever-growing and developing ways, using creative shapes, textures, and colours to keep the look exciting, while having an essence, an atmosphere, of their distintive brand trademark.

Valentino Resort 2013 look 1

For Resort 2013 they brought out a delicious colour scheme that reminded us of an overflowing plate of macaroons. Lemon yellows, raspberry and rosewater pinks, mint greens, creamy vanilla whites, icy blues and majestic aqua colours. Although there were plenty of one-colour looks, when lace was involved, they mixed it up in a rainbow of delicately embroidered clusters of laser-specific petals, billowing over layers of natural sheer.

It's a breathtaking and wholly different way to wear the fabric, and provides us with a host of inspiration as the snow thaws and Spring starts to arrive. Choose coloured lace, with a subtle but rich vintage feel to it. A mossy green Valentino dress is a great place to start, or a warm rosy pink Christopher Kane top. Feed the look into your whole outfit, too. Don't be afraid to work it head-to-toe. A cleverly made Aurelie Bidermann lace cuff, or a pair of silver lace cut-out Charlotte Olympia sandals could make an outfit, as could a contrasting dark Dolce & Gabbana clutch.

Lace is a playful material, it's flirtatious, and covers as much as it reveals. Remember this as you set the tone of your look - keep it fun, fresh and in keeping with the time of year.
