How to wear 90s?
- Hannah Slapper
Ah, the '90s. You might have guessed that this week, we're feeling kind of nostalgic over the decade of our youth. Whilst we were planning how to sneak '90s style into our current wardrobes, we started daydreaming of our schoolgirl crushes. My, my, my did the floodgates open. Every single woman in the office had an opinion, and after a screaming and scrabbling row, ten men were drafted as the most desirable, cringe, and completely perfect objects of our infatuation. As a Thursday afternoon treat, we've compiled the list of hottest guys for you in delicious image format. Enjoy.
1. MARKY MARK
Now known as a serious actor, it's hard to believe that in 1991, Mark Wahlberg was famous for being the frontman of rap ensemble Marky Mark and the Funky Bunch. Retrospectively traumatising, but at the time he was the most erotic of men. Something about his single 'Good Vibrations' produced exactly that. Plus, we liked his 'tude.
Still kinda melting.
2. CHANDLER BING
Or, Matthew Perry if you want to get technical. Back in the era of Friends, arguably the greatest sitcom of all time, nobody knew the real Perry. He was Chandler, and he would never be able to escape that. Not really such a curse because, although awkward and terrible with women, Chandler was truly hilarious, the best dancer ever, and really rather charming.
You gotta admit, he's pretty huggable.
3. RYAN PHILLIPE
Ryan Phillipe has always been, and will always be super smokin' hot. Not only was he in I Know What You Did Last Summer with fellow '90s heart throb Freddie Prinze Junior, he was also the leading man in Cruel Intentions. Ok, so his creepy obsession with his step-sister was not cool, and he was pretty harsh to everyone. But the tender love scene with Reese Witherspoon? Who he then went on to marry in real life? That's kinda amazing.
We always knew he had a cute side.
4. WILL SMITH
In West Philadelphia, born and raised. In the playground, was where he spent most of his days. Will Smith was the hilarious, super cool and always irreverently dressed protagonist from The Fresh Prince of Bel Air, which was basically compulsory post-dinner watching for many families. This programme was amazing, and then he went on to become a rapper and star in Men In Black. Hell yeah.
Genuinely too cool for school.
5. DAVID BECKHAM
This is one for the guys and the gals. Something about those curtains and those legs drove the entire nation crazy. Men wanted to be like him and women wanted to be with him. He could kick a ball, he had a silly-but-cute high voice, 65 brain cells, his hair flew like the wind when he ran, and he could pull off a serious curve-ball. What's not to love?
Oh, and he hooked up with our favourite Spice Girl-cum-fashion designer.
6. JARED LETO
Alright, alright, you caught us out. This isn't strictly a '90s crush, because let's be honest, he's still extremely hot as the lead singer of 30 Seconds to Mars. However, as Jordan Catalano, he was the epitome of dreamy. Those flowing locks, intense eyes and general bad-boy attitude made him irresistible to Claire Danes, and he was firmly in our fantasies.
Imagine if he looked at you like that. Squee.
7. PAUL NICHOLLS
Nicholls played the intense, schizophrenic, and generally memorable character of Joe Wicks in Eastenders. Despite this, we all still thought he was proper gorgeous and looked in vain for our Cosmo Girl centre page spread of his moody gaze. Rather than fading into the background, he has actually appeared in quite a lot of British TV, including starring as the romantic interest of Billie Piper in Diary of a Call Girl. We definitely had a bit of a crush on him in that too.
8. KURT COBAIN
He lead the grunge movement with Nirvana, which is enough of a reason to worship the man, but something about his 'don't give a f*&$' attitude really turned us on. He wore hole-ridden jumpers on Top of the Pops and sang with a genuine drawl. Plus he hated things like 'the system'. We all knew he was a bit messed up, but not really to what extent, and when he took his own life, millions mourned the loss of an icon.
The hair flick was his ultimate power move.
9. ROBBIE WILLIAMS
In hindsight, we know that Robbie Williams was always suffering from ADHD, but at the time we just thought he was a hilarious and excitable prankster. He was always the member of Take That who wanted to have a laugh, whether it was jumping on his band mates, screaming at the camera, or taking advantage of a silly photo opportunity.
No one could resist such a cheeky grin.
10. LEONARDO DICAPRIO
Who knew this cute little youngster would turn into the most earnest man in Hollywood? We remember the exact moment he stole our hearts, as the cheeky, innocent and yet effortlessly sexy Jack in Titanic. All those sleepless nights wondering what would happen if he drew us naked were unfulfilled, but we did enjoy seeing him grow up to be such a huge talent.
Plus our hearts will go on, and on.
