Well, you've scrolled down the lengthy pixels of draped and layered tartan from the Comme des Garçons Autumn Winter 2010 collection, you may understand what we mean by polished punk. Yes, it's a strange concept that has been sporadically adopted by designers over the years, and was given the highest accolade last night during the 2013 Met Gala.
The theme was Punk: Chaos to Couture, celebrating how many of the world's greatest designers have been influenced by the punk movement at one time in their career. Although some of the stars on the red carpet chickened out of actually channeling the edgy anarchic look, there were others who got it spot on, with enough smoky eye, hair volume and eccentricity to honour the exhibition opening.
If the Met Gala is saying that punk is in, then there's no doubt that we should have something studded or slightly aggressive in our wardrobes for when we're feeling a bit angry. Having said that, punk doesn't necessarily mean digging out your old, unwashed ripped teen t-shirts. You can easily get a more polished look by investing in some quality pieces.
Queen, and arguably founder of the punk movement is of course Vivienne Westwood, and what better way to pay homage to the trend than with some classic tartan, avec train. We love the way it almost looks like an impromptu scarf-turned-bustier - it has that casual 'of the moment' elegance that punk is so good at creating.
Another punk classic is leather, whether it's the panelled subversion of an All Saints leather pencil skirt, the stabbing studs of a Givenchy tote, or the shiny and distinctive classic of the Doc Marten boot.
Finally, for the full-on look, Tom Binns has created some silver safety pin earrings. All the strength of the trend, but without the nasty infections that come from using stationary as accessory. You'll look as savage as a sex pistol, but with a sophisticated edge.
