How to wear 12 hour dressing?
- words by Hannah Slapper, styling by Alice Cuffe
Seeing as it's so cold most of the time (we don't trust the current sunshine in London to last more than six hours), we've taken a rather strong interest in the imminent sale of Pre-Fall. This part-summery part-wintery eclectic mix from the designer-pool is getting more and more important as a way for brands to bridge the gap between their summer and winter collections. It's also a chance for them to go more strongly in one direction or the other: either to experiment with crazier designs than usual, or to go the ultra-wearable route.
One of our favourite collections of the Pre-Fall season was 3.1 Philip Lim, who really picked up on the need for light layers during these transitional months. It's a great sell too, because of the weather issues on the planet at the moment, women everywhere are going to be spending a little more a little earlier than usual.
We especially like the way that Lim has redefined what these layers need to be - they don't have to be your standard open-knit sweater or pastel leather jacket. You can have a thickly made silken jumper, think about unusual sleeve lengths or necklines and make more of a statement with it that you might have done before.
If you're in need of some cover-up inspiration then we say follow Philip's lead and choose something that's unusual but also light and airy. The long length and fluffy texture of Topshop Unique's jumper makes it ideal for wearing over tiny shorts and summery jeans, while the feminine pink of Clu's Terry Sweater is enhanced by an asymmetric sheer ruffled hem, perfect with flowing skirts. The magical marbled effect of Kenzo's cloud print ensures that you only see blue skies even if there are clouds overhead, and the simplicity of Stella McCartney's neutral toned knit and Neil Barrett's mesh cropped top are great for those who need versatility.
